Where do I begin? Every time I take a new class I find myself overflowing with mixed emotions. I am always a bit excited and overwhelmed at the same time. My mind seems to race away full speed, ready to start everything at one time. I love all the new ideas and the possibilities they promise. I compose lengthy lists of the ideas I hope to use to transform my classroom. Usually, the classes I talk are grade specific or at the very least geared towards a primary classroom. I am a bit puzzled as to how to incorporate blogs, wikis and more into my room. I'm thinking that it would be a great idea to develop videos of the math games we use in second grade. Then the parents could access the instructions online, to reinforce them at home. This should be an interesting and enjoyable adventure.

  1. Those are all great ideas. I think that it is always a challenge to incorporate student participation in an elementary class (from what I've read). I wonder if you could benefit from doing work corporately and you be the gatekeeper through whom the content makes its way to the net? It would let kids show their group work to parents, etc. without more papers getting copied/ going home in folders.

    Good post, FYI.

  2. At the very least, it will be great for the younger kids to become aquainted with what blogs and wikis are. Then they can relate those ideas to what they are doing outside of school. And it will be great when they come to the junior high and already know how to do some of this stuff:).

  3. Making videos of math games sounds like a great way to use 2.0 skills. The videos could even be watched by another class. More kids would benefit! You are a creative thinker.

  4. Great post, Maria. As a former primary teacher, I am always asking myself the same question when I find a new tool. Basically, we don't give primary students enough credit. They have grown up with Webkinz, PBS Kids, and Club Penguin. Working with blogs, digital storytelling, VoiceThread, and other tools is just a natural progression.

  5. I am always amazed at how much the junior high students know about technology. Whatever you are doing at the elementary is working! I agree with Emily. The more familiar they are with simply what these things are, the more prepared they will be to create these things themselves.
